An IP rating describes how an enclosure is designed to resist contact with solid objects and the entry of water. It is useful when choosing lighting for bathrooms, utility spaces and other locations where moisture may be present.
How the Code Works
“IP” is followed by two characters. The first digit relates to protection against access to hazardous parts and solid foreign objects. The second digit relates to protection against water. A higher digit does not make a fitting suitable for every environment; the complete rating and installation instructions must be considered together.
Why Location Matters
A dry bedroom or living room does not present the same conditions as a bathroom, covered exterior or utility area. Distance from water sources, condensation, ventilation, mounting orientation and local electrical rules can all affect whether a product is appropriate.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming “water-resistant” means waterproof
- Using a product outdoors because it is suitable for a bathroom
- Ignoring the installation orientation stated by the manufacturer
- Relying on a photograph instead of the product’s stated IP rating
- Assuming the bulb alone determines the protection of the complete fitting
Check the Exact Variant
Different sizes, drivers or configurations may have different specifications. Confirm that the IP rating and technical documentation apply to the exact product and variant you intend to purchase.
Ask a Qualified Installer
Bathroom and damp-location installations should be assessed by a suitably qualified electrician familiar with the rules at the installation address. The installer should determine the correct location, circuit protection, mounting method and suitability of the fitting.
