Hardwired lighting forms part of a building’s electrical installation. Safe installation depends on the product, the electrical supply, the mounting surface and the rules that apply at the property.
Use a Qualified Electrician
A suitably qualified electrician should install, replace or alter a hardwired light fitting. The electrician can isolate and test the circuit, identify the conductors, assess the existing wiring and select appropriate fixings.
Check the Product Before Installation
- Confirm that the product and variant match the order.
- Inspect the fitting, cable, driver, canopy and components for damage.
- Read the supplied instructions before work begins.
- Verify the rated voltage, frequency, maximum wattage and dimming requirements.
- Confirm the fixture’s dimensions, weight and mounting method.
- Check any stated IP rating against the intended location.
Do not install or energise a product that is damaged, incomplete or incompatible with the intended supply.
Assess the Mounting Point
The ceiling or wall must support the complete weight of the fitting. Decorative coverings and plasterboard alone may not provide adequate support. The installer should use fixings suitable for the underlying structure and keep required clearances from insulation or combustible materials.
Lighting Controls and LED Drivers
Dimmers, transformers and LED drivers must be compatible with the fitting and light source. Incompatible controls can cause flicker, noise, poor performance or damage. Never assume a fitting is dimmable unless the exact product specification says so.
After Installation
The electrician should test the installation and ensure that the fitting is stable, correctly assembled and operating normally. Keep the instructions and product details for future maintenance. Disconnect the supply and stop using the fitting if there is overheating, exposed wiring, unusual odour, instability or repeated electrical faults.
